Artist's Comments

This is the first broom I've made. I'm planning to make more decorative brooms. This one is for an art exhibit called 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon' and is based on a fairy tale. Every fairy tale needs a witch's broom for transportation.

The handle is white locust and the straw is sorghum grass. The braid is sweetgrass, the feather is from a turkey, and the painted bone is from a sheep cairn. There's also a bell in there. The silver shield is a a piece of jewelry I bought and is set with turquoise and moonstone.

Wow! This looks like it turned out really well. Might be a bit uncomfortable to ride, though. How do the binding threads get tied?

You actually wrap them tightly over, under, and around the layers. The multi-colored strings are 'sewn' in using very large stitches.

Did you learn that from a class or so? And is there any symbolism behind the choices of components? There's more leeway for that in something like this than in, say, clay...

I did learn making the broom in a class. All the decorative work is on my own. Each piece was carefully selected. The moonstone and turquoise shield represent safety (important when flying) and the moonstone also ties into the art show theme of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. The bell is a common ritual tool, as is the sweetgrass (smudging, incense). The bone is from a friend's sheep cairn and was painted as part of a set of shamanic tools I worked on once. The feather is also for flight.
